Ian MacKaye, straightedge Fugazi frontman, with some interesting thoughts on skateboarding expressed in this talk for the Library of Congress.

Skatebrand Emerica released some raw and uncut B-sides from their recent video MADE. Enjoy this pure street skating by Leo Romero, edited without music and showing also failed attempts and slams. And remember, this is only the stuff that did not make it into the video!

Happy New Year! If you don’t use fireworks and want to skate next year…
Max Hartveld notified us about the strangest skatepark related news of the year on this last day of 2013. The Municipality of Almere (NL) made a rather peculiar proposal to their youth, trying to minimize the yearly damage related to New Year’s fireworks. If the damage will be below 75.000,- a new skatepark will be made.
Strange that firework damage gets related to skate youth. It gives a wrong signal and stigmatizes a group that uses public space as skaters and labels them as vandalists. Click the image for the whole article and comments.

Sander Woertman wrote a blog on De Architect about skateboarding and Rotterdam mentioning our Skatepool initiative and our research project ‘GoSidewalkSurfing’. It also mentions the tribute local Rotterdam skate company Dufarge made to the favorite skatespot, the Museumpark Flag by OMA/AMO. Nice to see the appreciation of one of our research locations from a users’ perspective!

Jantje Beton officially joined our expert panel team! Anne Koning finds it not only interesting, but necessary to participate since it could be a start of rethinking the (often unintentional) fenced-off, isolated playgrounds and skateparks and creating usable public spaces for all children instead of separated groups. We are very happy with this support by such a renowned organization!

GoSidewalkSurfing is a self initiated research project about skateboarding and public space by LAGADO architects from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The aim of our research is to generate new ideas for integrating skateboarding in the public space, without making standard monofunctional skateparks. This blog shows some examples and the progress of our project.

The research is funded by the Creative Industries Fund NL.
